Interpreter of Maladies

Interpreter of Maladies is stories collection written by Jhumpa Lahiri. I first read Jhumpa’s book a year ago, her Namesake could fascinate me though that book is quite dragging. This time, however, she wrote her stories with open ending in each of the story.

Like in Ms. Sen’s..
to be honest, I still am trying to figure out what happened to Mrs Sen after she stop babysitting for Eliot and why she hated driving so much?

I love A temporary matter..
in this story Jhumpa tries to show us that humans can interact better when they are put in an awkward position. Yeah, this story really struck me because here, unlike in other stories,Jhumpa really put some emotions into it.

This blessed house however really terrified me. It made me wondering why the house previous owner left all the sacred things???

The Namesake

The story is too long, in Indonesia we call it “bertele-tele.”

In fact, I hate Gogol the main character here. I think he’s very unappreciative toward his parents by changing his name..just because he hates the sound of it. However, my heart goes to his parents, Ashima and Ashoke. I can’t put it into words, they seem so hopelessly innocent in the foreign country.

Sorry to say I feel like wanting to slap Gogol’s wife’s face for her infedility. Hate her!

Actually I like the movie version better than the book. In the movie, Gogol seems not to nyebelin ;)
